Johnston Canyon

Johnston Canyon movie loop. This movie loop is the thirty frame movie loop used in the Waterfall World.

Johnston Canyon movie loop 2 This is the same movie loop, but with some water sound!

Audio field capture

Troll Falls audio capture. This movie shows the location where Rob Tow recorded the final sound of water falling for the Waterfall World. We went to several waterfalls, and also recorded running streams. At Troll Falls, Brenda Laurel directed Rob to go right into the roaring falls, with microphones strapped to his head, to record the sound of the water falling on his head, for later use in the VR environment. Crow flight

Crow flight. Interval Research researcher Sean White explores embodiment as Crow and experiences the exuberence of Crow flight, and then graciously swaps his body with another participant - intercut are shots of Sean in the VR harness, and his VR framegrabs left eye's view from the video fed into his VR helmet. Mosquito Demo

Mosquito demo. This clip shows Rob Tow demoing the cenceptual prototype of the Goddess's minion the Mosquito to Steve Saunders while Brenda Laurel talks to her children back in California. It was intended that the mosquito would buzz about the head of the participant; spatialized sound would make it quite annoyingly real... we hoped that we would provoke people into waving so vigorously that they would slap the VR helmets in a vain attempt to smash the mosquito as it danced away from their hands and buzzed in their ears. We fully implemented the mosquito, but in the last day before the performance a bug (!) developed in the code controlling the mosquito, and we didn't have time to fix it, so we commented the call out... Critter Animation

Critter animation. We wired the four position sensors worn by participants to the four corners of the polygon that the Critter 's icon was projected on to, and "wriggled" the polygon dynamicly in accordance with the participants movements - this was a compelling communication of presence by the smart costume worn by the participants; but we ran out of time, and could not include this in the performance. If we had only had even another two days, both this and the mosquito would have made it in... Video by Sean White

Brenda & Rob
